York Art Gallery

Sightseeing attraction | York | England | United Kingdom

The York Art Gallery is one of the most significant art galleries in York, England, and a cultural gem that presents an impressive collection of artworks from various periods. The gallery plays a central role in the city's cultural life, offering visitors a fascinating insight into the world of painting, sculpture, and ceramics.

The history of the York Art Gallery dates back to the 19th century. The building was originally constructed in 1879 and initially served as an exhibition space for a large art and industry exhibition. Later, it was converted into an art gallery and over the decades has become one of the leading museums of visual arts in Northern England.

The collection of the York Art Gallery is extremely diverse and includes works from various art periods, from the Renaissance to the Baroque to modern art. Particularly notable is the significant collection of British paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, including works by artists such as J.M.W. Turner, William Etty, and L.S. Lowry. Etty, one of York's most famous painters, holds a special place in the gallery as an extensive collection of his works is exhibited.

In addition to British art, the gallery also houses an outstanding collection of European paintings, including works from Italy, the Netherlands, and France. Dutch painting from the 17th century is particularly well represented, with impressive landscape and portrait paintings.

Another highlight of the York Art Gallery is the CoCA, one of the most important collections of contemporary and historical ceramics in Britain. This unique department showcases works from various centuries and features both traditional pottery and modern ceramic artworks. The collection includes significant pieces by artists such as Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, and Bernard Leach, who are regarded as pioneers of modern ceramics.

The architecture of the York Art Gallery itself is an impressive example of Victorian design, combined with modern extensions. Following extensive renovations, the gallery has been equipped with new exhibition spaces, interactive areas, and modern facilities to showcase art in innovative ways.

In addition to the permanent collections, the gallery regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, and art events that explore different art movements and creative techniques. Both classical and contemporary art are presented, appealing to a wide audience.

Another important aspect of the York Art Gallery is its commitment to education and art appreciation. It offers numerous programs for students, scholars, and art enthusiasts to promote understanding and appreciation of art. Interactive tours and creative workshops are particularly popular, allowing visitors to actively experience art.

The York Art Gallery is not only a significant art institution but also an inspiring place for art lovers and visitors who want to learn more about the rich artistic past and present. With its diverse collection, innovative presentations, and unique atmosphere, it is one of the most important cultural attractions in York and a must-visit for any art enthusiast.

Went to see the William Morris exhibition and it didn't disappoint! Beautiful iconic wallpapers interspersed with other beautiful designs and decorative printing plates.

The gallery is made up of one interesting exhibition, a small but still nice permanent collection and a large ceramic exhibition. The volunteer inside the Anthony Shaw Collection was really helpful and friendly, I had a lovely time chatting with her.

Really disappointed to see they charge for access to the gallery now. Their charitable aims cite inclusion and community involvement in art, but charging £8+ per person obviously excludes anyone below a certain economic standing. I get these facilities cost money to run, but I’m sure charging for special exhibits but leaving most of the gallery free to access would still generate revenue alongside the cafe. Galleries in Leeds and Hull remain free so why charge in York. If donations do go towards helping disadvantaged communities access arts, then I’d like to hear more, but I won’t be returning. It doesn’t really feel like a charity to me, more like a private entertainment business that also gets the benefit of being able to apply for lots of grants.

I would put 0 if I could. It is terribly expensive for what they are displaying, not worthy at all. I wish I could have gotten a refund.

Visited over the weekend for the William Morris exhibition which was very informative, unfortunately but understandably weren't allowed to take photos of that. The permanent fixtures upstairs were nice to have a look around too. We received a friendly welcome upon entry and there were some lovely items for sale in the shop. The only downside was the cafe was closed, I'm not sure why but we were planning to visit after having the cake highly recommended! Lovely decor and everywhere very clean. Will definitely keep an eye on any future exhibitions here :)

Lovely building, uninspiring inside. Was eager to see William Morris Wallpaper exhibition, but boring presentation. Poor value for entrance fee. Staff friendly and pleasant and a pretty little shop.

Popped in yesterday to see the ceramics collection. Didn’t research before I went and was told they were moving some pieces but there was still plenty to see. The staff were friendly and prices were fair, even with donation. I paid less than £10 for full access to all of the current exhibitions. Worth every penny to see the calibre of work on display. Pieces by Magdalene Odundo and Carol McNicoll in their “Wall of Women” were a firm favourite. Highly recommend!

We went specifically for the William Morris wallpaper exhibition, which was brilliantly presented and so informative. Didn't have time to see the rest of the galleries. Helpful and friendly staff.

Visited for the William Morris exhibition. Superb and put his work in context with others well. Permanent exhibition good too, especially the pottery.

It is said that a fool never learns from his mistakes. Having just been “mugged” by the Yorkshire Museum, I walked a few hundred yards and got “mugged” again by the York Art Gallery. This lot were asking an admission charge of £8.50. I paid it and went in. To my untrained eye, the exhibits on display seemed to be part of the Gallery’s “Garbage, old and new” collection. I soon got around and exited. For that price, they could have provided a cup of tea and a biscuit but hospitality is not part of their stock in trade. “In 2023, tourism generated an economic impact of £1.82 billion to York's visitor economy.“ GOOGLE GEMMINI. York’s general greed and fakery is an embarrassment to England; it’s like a giant gift-shoppe which sells low-quality but expensive bric-a-bat.

Lovely display space. Just the right size to get around without getting weary. Delighted to see so many female artists being exhibited, as well as some Grayson Perry ceramics and a Lowry.
